Q: I have life insurance and my agent told me that my funeral expenses will be covered.

A: True, the life insurance you purchased may include some funds for your funeral expenses. But your life insurance proceeds are cash that is given to your beneficiary at the time of your death, upon presentation of proof of death (original death certificate).

Your life insurance coverage does not include the actual funeral plan or contract signed with a funeral home that “locks in” the prices. For example, your life insurance coverage may have allowed $10,000 for your funeral expenses based on current-year prices. If you die 20 or more years later, the cost of the actual funeral expense would have increased to more than $10,000. This means that your family will then have to pay for the difference.

When you plan your funeral with Alternatives Life Planners, you would be signing 2 contracts: the first one is with Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Services for your actual funeral plan based on your preferences and on current year prices. The second contract is with TruStage Life Of Canada, which will receive your payment, safeguard, and invest your money for you. When you die, no matter how many years later, the prices in the signed contract that are indicated as “guaranteed” are “locked in”.

Q: I already have a Will and it includes my wishes for my funeral

A: Your Will is a legal document that allows you to state your wishes on “what” goes to “whom”. Your wishes for your funeral may be included in your Will, but as a practice, Wills are not read until after your funeral.
